  • Some people who really should be on the mailing list are missing (action item)
3. Short update for the last 3 months (3 main issues)

What has been your main focus on services since last meeting

3.1 Funet

  • Funet launches customer survey today. Survey is arranged in every two years. Purpose of the survey is to gather feedback from customers about current Funet services and Funet performance and also information about possible future improvements. Survey is sent to named customer organisation contacts. Comment: Could Funet provide general information about the survey in a written form? (action item)
  • Innovation evaluation process for CSC has been introduced.
  • Plannning about University "youtube" service and videoconference bridge.
  • Sami Andberg has left Funet. He is working on same field (video services) but is now self-employed.

3.2 Sunet

  • Have been investigated P2P large file transfer service. Frontend for NORDUShare code is being developed. Expected to be ready by mid May.
  • Plans to use Surfnet antispam product (based on CanIT).
  • Media distribution service. Telin product is being evaluated. Question if the product can do federated authentication remains.

3.3 UNI-C

  • Video material hosting service is being studied
  • Idea collection service for development projects has been in use for some time
  • Service evaluation completed. Evaluation included analyse how much customers saves in money and resources when they use centralized UNI-C services compared to commercial/own services. As well, the enviromental impact has been measured.

3.4 RHNET

  • there was none representing RHNET

3.5 UNINETT

  • There had been an organisation merge between network and services departments. FEIDE and e-Campus (new project) are not included in the merge.
  • Lately the focus has been on the web-/videoconferencing and streaming services.
Comment: New version of EVO has been released and it looks promising.
  • Filesender service looks good.

3.6 NORDUnet

  • NORDUShare backend code has been completed.
4. Service Matrix

4.1 Status for the Service Matrix

4.2 Discussion about the "End user part" of the Service Matrix

What type of service is considered as "End user service"?
There was discussion about terminology: Is the end user University or student?
How the support organisations should interact (local support and centralised support)?

Agreed to put the terminology aside and pick a category to look at.
The housing-storage-content-delivery category was selected:

Funet

  • Open public file server: the content of the nic.funet.fi is being revised (open access, open source)
  • IPTV service: early plans to have own channels.
  • Usenet News: Some discussion about the service future. Funet will run news service in a way that customers have exit process for their service. Comment: Sunet will shut down News during 2010. UNINETT has shut central usenet service down couple of years ago. Comment: Is one news-server enough for Europe/Nordic?
  • CSC Stream will be replaced by "University-tube" when it is ready.
  • Akamai instance has been there for quite a while

UNINETT

  • Trofast administration services for business use, project management part is coming in the future.
  • FTP server has been upgraded. Backend filesystem for FTP could host also Filesender service
  • Local DNS and inbound/outbound email service for organisations who cannot do these on their own is provided
  • Akamai instance
  • Darwin streaming service (possiby retiring service)

UNI-C

  • Plans to ramp down Usenet service
  • Archive service for TV programs (edumedia).
  • Comment: Could edumedia service utilize federated authentication (Kalmar) to get it available internationally for testing. First step could be to provide few test accounts. Perharps too early at the moment.
  • Discussion about Online Backup. UNINETT has iSCSI online backup pilot (Data domain with deduplication) ongoing which have showed good results. Question: Is there any results and figures available from the pilot? Yes, there is (action item)

SUNET

  • FTP service is alive and kicking far into future.
  • Mailing list service
  • Akamai
  • (Adobe) Connect (Pro) service which can do conference and content delivery.

Question: Would some of the service feasible to launch internationally? (example via Kalmar?) (action items)
Comment: Some of the service might be "clonable" for other countries and maybe even have redundancy between countries.
Comment: Could some of the service (ACP for example hosted by "trusted party" (Nordunet?) for several countries?
Comment: More services should be exposed for larger audience via Kalmar. We could share our services internationally.
Suggestion to open e.g. NORDUnet wiki for wider audience as a first step. This needs to wiki have Kamar functionality, which is not the case yet.
Lets list existing services which could be accessible via Kalmar (action item).
