2.3 New work area in the Wiki

There was discussion of the work group documentation.

Decisions:

  • Set up a work area in the Wiki for the work group documents (TODO/Qvist)
  • the minutes should be more verbose in the future (secretary)
3. Short update for the last 4 months (3 main issues)

3.1 Funet

  • videoconferencing: CSC is searching possibilities to lease bridge capacity (a pilot project)
  • Funet network: The DWDM network upgrade is about to be finished - back to business as normal.
  • Funet customer survey: The results are there and analyzed. The action planning is in progress.

3.2 Sunet

  • Torrent-based distribution system is almost ready. The service is meant for easing the transfer of large data sets and files.
  • e-mail filtering service has been developed with SWAMI support. Expecting a service launch quite soon.
  • a new routing core is being planned

3.3 UNI-C

3.4 RHNET

  • there was nobody present from RHNET

3.5 UNINETT

  • eCampus: project has been working on webconferencing soulution. Have had some issues with vendor support for identification federation. The co-operation possibilities between Nordic NRENs were discussed.
  • CloudStore installation: it is up&running, code finalization is underway.
  • Webmeetings: blogging available at blog.ecampus.no

3.6 NORDUnet

  • Wiki services: are introducing a new LDAP, all the user IDs will be federated in the near future
  • cross border fiber initiatives: there will be negotiations between Uninett and Sunet. Some agreement is expected by April 2011.
  • Baltic Ring: A study was done last year ("Erik Elmroth: Knowledge Infrastructure for the Fifth freedom in the Baltic Sea Area"). One of the recommendations was to search possibilities to build a federated ring around the Baltic Sea. A pre-study project is being launched. It is financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers
4. Service Matrix

4.1 Status for the Service Matrix

  • all the NRENs have filled their services

Latest update:

  • SUNET: anti-SPAM
  • NORDUNET: federated conferencing services
  • RHNET: completely filled now for the first time
  • UNINETT: no recent updates
  • FSKnet: no recent updates
  • Funet: used federation mapping for some initial services

Misplaced services:

  • FSKnet: the status of some of the services will change due to the focusing, anti-SPAM service is to be moved under security services,
  • Funet: certificate service belongs under authentication services

4.2. Category: security services

The security services were discussed.

  • Uninett:
    • VK toolbox is a virtualized monitoring environment/solution which is meant for colleges. The software is mostly open source and they are centrally managed, updated and backed up. A SMS messaging interface is also attached to the system. The hosts at the monitored network can also be sandboxed. There was interest to the system by SUNET and Funet.
    • security auditing is there as a service. The Framework might be usable to other NRENs. TODO: JQ to investigate
    • Magnus introduced Dike (Norwegian anti-SPAM service). It's based on OS tools.
  • FSKnet:
    • vulnerabilities database: FSKnet subscribes to security information sources and refines/classifies the information in a searchable database. The service is meant for sysadmins.
    • scanning service: FSKnet scans it's networks and links the reports to the vulnerabilities database. The reports are sent to local sysadmins. The reports are in English.
    • TODO/ALL: The scanning service should be investigated.
    • TODO/Martin: provide an example scanning report
    • Martin gave introduction to the Danish anti-SPAM service. The system includes a quarantine box where all e-mail is stored for a while
  • CSC/Funet
    • CSC arranged an ISO27001 course some years ago for aiding member organizations to audit themselves
    • CSC has a Nessus scanner for customer use. It's missing from the list (TODO!!)
    • the Funet Black List is based on Supermicro reputation service at the moment
  • decision: next meeting there will be a topic/agenda item about the e-mail filtering
  • future security services: wireless network scanning for campus use and end-user enabled traffic filtering were discussed
5. Collecting user cases and testimonials
  • There was discussion on the meaning of the "use case". Two different alternatives were identified:
    • I: NRENs share services with one another
    • II: advanced users use NREN services
  • suggestion was made to have a different mark for shared service in the service matrix (star?)
  • decision: group members will upload the use cases to the new work area in the Wiki
6. Next meeting

The next meeting will be in Stockholm NORDUnet office (Tulegatan 11), November 24th, 2010.
