1. Introduction
- participants introduced themselves
- Tiina Leiponen explained the background for the survey and BoF
2. Survey results and discussion
- The survey results were discussed one by one
- Following includes a short summary of the disctussion
Question no 1. Lightpath;
- question was about dedicated circuits in Nordic DWDM networks
- description; anything else than IP
- in Nordic fairly easy ~V problems start when going out
- dedicated circuits
- may pop up any time
- published on Danish nren site
- 1G connection within Nordunet possible within days
o no common procedures or agreenments yet
o no guidelines for users or - might be convenient if Nodrunet
o some agreement on policies - important to publish some more information about this
o there is a need for Nordunet-level service description - service for port rate services (1G, 10G) is easy to arrange
o problems come when starting to do other speeds or exotic services
o Nordunet promised that some information about the services could be disseminated within days - lightpaths problematic to monitor ~V if not used for a while, hard to know when problems started
o CPE needed to monitor end-to-end services
o needs to be discussed in more detail within a special group - Jacko Koster from Uninett might have a use case about this
o LHC another?
Question no 2. IPTV content production
- the question terminology was not clear; contect production vs. content distribution
- in Sweden ~V testing IPTV , multicast capable mostly
- from technical point of view there are no problems
- need for a Nordunet forum on these issues
- full scale test going on in Uninett
- some kind of forum might be needed
o best practices for multicast; routers, firewalls, etc.
Question no 3. Videoconference
- the question was about offering video conference services
- discussion about differences of video conferencing and web conferencing
- problems in connectivity between some institutions (firewalls etc).
- ~Qjoint MCU could make sense, no need for multiple ones~R
- Uni-C is installing two services, one for research and other for (hospital-network?) ?
- ~Qstart small, scale up~R ~VIngrid
- ~Qif it has a price, it is valued higher~R
- small survey about the video and web-conferencing systems and procedures in place should be done
o some questions about
-
Question no 4. was bypassed
Question no 5. ~Qyoutube-style services~R
- the question was about setting up a video sharing service, similar in ways to YouTube, where users could utilize federated identities to upload and access
video material - edumedia.dk up and running
iPass service available from Uni-cC
- unified billing for different wlan-networks
3. Next steps
The following actions are proposed. The actions are listed according to the active partner.
- CTO-forum (Nordunet/Fischer);
o need for a new forum / working group;
§ comparison of service portfolios
§inter-NREN services working group
o processes service description about lightpaths provided by Nordunet
o If the legal and financial issues are solved, sharing services would become much easier
o other services to be discussed (not discussed here due to the lack of time)
§ ie. server certificates - CSC (Funet/Miettinen);
o sends out the survey results and BoF minutes
o summons an inter-nren working group ~Vkickoff in January 2010
§ makes the meeting preparations - Nordunet (Qvist);
o deliveres service description about lightpaths
o
